LUCAS OIL DRAG BOAT RACING SERIES EXPANDS TV
Lucas unites all sanctioning bodies under one rules umbrella ...and 900 teams vie for 2013 National Championships.
January 18, 2013, Corona , CA, The 2013 Lucas Oil Drag Boat Series blasts into the New Year with expanded TV coverage, a new rule book, increased safety and a 10 national championship race series guaranteed to blow the minds of drag boat fans everywhere.
First and foremost is expanded TV coverage airing on CBS, CBS Sports Network, NBC Sports Network, SPEED and the MAVTV American Real network. Up from 30 minutes last year, each Lucas Oil Championship event will run a full hour allowing fans to peek behind the scenes as the drivers prepare to control some of the most powerful and dangerous machines on the planet. In addition to the professional show, which consists of Top Fuel Hydro, Top Alcohol Hydro, Top Alcohol Flat and Pro Mod running the 1,000 feet course, there are four Sportsman classes ranging from 8.00 to 11.00 second and three Bracket (dial-in) classes in the quarter mile. The Top Fuel Hydro class is especially mind blowing with the nitro methane powered V8's record breaking speeds of over 250mph and covering the liquid 1,000 feet in an elapsed time (ET) of 3.39 seconds.
"Drag Boat Racing is booming" says Lucas Oil's Executive Vice president, Bob Patison. "The fan base is expanding rapidly and more and more teams are competing nationally. Now our expanded 'on air' presence allows us to dig deeper and explain the techniques and technology behind a sport that easily rivals the thrills and thunder of Drag Racing on land, but with lake shores and river banks adding to the excitement."
For the first time in its dynamic history, Drag Boat Racing is united under one set of rules allowing more than 900 teams to run for a national championship. With live audiences ranging between 10,000 and 40,000 per event and packing the shorelines, 'safety' has become even more vital for the sport to grow. New rules include safer capsules (including latch systems), cut down windshields, Hans Devices (head and neck support) and medically trained Navy Seals on the water prepared to dive immediately to rescue drivers in trouble. All this technology is in place the entire 2013 season but can be seen especially at Lake Lucas in Wheatland, MO, the home of the 3rd Diamond Drag Boat Nationals. Opened in July 2011, Lake Lucas is 14 football fields long and the first ever 'purpose built' drag boat lake.
