Lucas Oil Mourns the Loss of Championship Drag Boat Racer, John Haas
Lucas Oil and the entire drag boat racing community mourns the loss of championship drag boat racer, John Haas, who lost his life while qualifying at the Mid-America Summer Nationals in Chouteau, Oklahoma during the weekend of August 7-8, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Deanna, their two sons, Joey and John, Jr., and his mother, Rose.
A private service for the family will be held on Wednesday, August 11, and a memorial service for the racing community and John’s many friends will be held from 2:00-5:00 pm on September 11, 2010 at the family’s home located at 2003 26th St, Allegan, Michigan, located 30-40 miles south of Grand Rapids.
A former Top Alcohol Hydro owner and driver, John joined the Speed Sports Top Fuel Hydro race team near the end of the 2004 season and lead the team to four World Championships in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and received Driver Of The Year awards in 2005 and 2007. On June 9, 2010, John was named as one of ten 2010 inductees into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame. He holds three of the top six fastest passes ever recorded in Top Fuel Hydro and was part of the fastest side by side run in the history of drag boat racing in 2008 . In addition, John had just secured the TFH ET and MPH records of 228.798 and 2.812 seconds at the 1,000-foot mark while competing at the Oklahoma City Drag Boat Nationals in June of this year.
A true gentleman and remarkable Champion, John will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.
