Carl Renezeder Wins 2003 BorgWarner Shootout

Carl Renezeder and the Lucas Oil off-road team had a weekend at Crandon International Raceway that most drivers in the CORR Lucas Oil Off Road Series dream about. Renezeder started the weekend by increasing his championship points lead in the Pro-4 class followed by taking the checkered flag in the $100,000 World Championship BorgWarner Shootout.

Not only did Renezeder win the Shootout in his Lucas Oil Pro-4 Chevrolet, he won it from the pole position - something that has never happened in the Shootout’s nine year history. Renezeder’s qualifying time was an impressive 1.25.1-seconds around the 1.75-mile track.

The BorgWarner Shootout is a specialty race that pits high performance 800 horsepower 4x4 trucks against similarly configured 2-wheel drive trucks in a high-speed, 10-lap race at Crandon. The five fasted 2-wheel drive trucks receive a quarter-mile handicap start on Crandon’s famous Oklahoma Land Rush Start. Renezeder took the lead with four laps remaining and was able to hold off Curt LeDuc (Pro-4) and Scott Taylor (Pro-2) for the win.

“The BorgWarner Shootout is to off-road racing what the Indy 500 is to pavement racing,” said the Southern California native. “This is the biggest honor in short course truck racing and to be able to win is incredible for the team and all our sponsors, especially Lucas Oil.”

For winning the BorgWarner Shootout, Renezeder received a $20,000 check from Tim Manganello, chairman and chief executive officer of BorgWarner Corporation in Chicago, Illinois as well as a $7,500 check for the Borgwarner “King of Off Road Racing” World Championship Driver’s Award.

Prior to winning the Shootout, Renezeder recorded back-to-back victories in the Pro-4 class. In Rounds 11 and 12, Renezeder held off LeDuc and Scott Douglas for the win and took the points lead in the process. Renezeder is now ten points ahead of second place driver LeDuc. Following Round 11 on Saturday night, Renezeder was named the Pro-4 World Champion.

“The weekend seemed to come together just right,” continued Renezeder. “This team came full circle and our Lucas Oil truck was dialed-in and stayed together like it was supposed to. I couldn’t have accomplished all this without the help of Lucas Oil and their high quality products.”

These two victories brought Renezeder’s season total to four. The first win of the season came during Round 6 at Crandon with the second win taking place during Round 8 at Bark River.

Renezeder continues to gain respect and recognition as his list of accomplishments continues to grow and includes winning the Long Jump Contest by jumping 192 feet (Bark River, Michigan, August 8, 2003); recording the fastest 2WD All-time lap record at 1:26:64-seconds (Crandon, Wisconsin, August 31, 2001); becoming the only driver to win both Pro-2 and Pro-4 World Championship Races in the same race weekend (Crandon, Wisconsin, Labor Day 2002); and winning the 1994 Baja 1000 in the Unlimited Class.

Renezeder’s list of sponsors includes Lucas Oil Products, BF Goodrich, K&N Filters, Goodridge, Precision Gear, Auto Meter, MSD Ignition, JE Pistons, Oakwood Development and MLS.

The final two rounds of the 2003 CORR Lucas Oil Pro Series are scheduled for Sept. 13-14 at Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin, New York.
