Palo Verde College began its new semester with a new technology building and a sponsor for its automotive program. The automotive program is now the "Lucas Oil Automotive Technology Program." Lucas Oil Products, Inc., which has sponsored races at the Colorado River Country Fairgrounds for the past five years, entered into an agreement with Palo Verde College for the naming rights to the automotive program.

On a Sunday afternoon in Muncie Indiana, a major performance barrier was broken. For the first time ever, a diesel powered vehicle accelerated down the quarter mile in under nine seconds. The record now stands at 8.752 seconds at 148 MPH, set by the Bentz Racing Team from Littleton, Colorado. The previous best run before the event was a 9.11 second run by the Bentz Team at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado.
